Mission
Camp Max Straus was founded in 1938, and is owned and operated by Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles. The organization’s mission is to assist children, primarily from single-parent homes, in achieving their full potential by helping to facilitate Excellence in Mentoring.
History
Camp Max Straus provides is a residential summer camp that provides year-round recreational activities for approximately 1,500 underprivileged children between the ages of 7-12 who primarily come from single (or substitute) parent homes. During the summer, the camp operates one and two week sessions. During the school year, Sports Buddies and Arts Buddies programs run each season at the camp.
The camp is open to children of all races and denominations who reside in Los Angeles County. Campers are referred from more than 100 schools, social service and community agencies, and counselors. Parents are also welcome to contact camp directly.
For seventy years and counting, Camp Max Straus has provided a quality camping experience for children of the greater Los Angeles area. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association, and the agency is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
