Camp Max Straus is a phenomenal experience for California's youth, providing a quality camping experience and leadership development...- Paul Krekorian, Assemblymember, 43rd District |
At Camp Max Straus, a positive, recreational, and interactive learning experience has been designed to direct the children towards an emotionally healthy and constructive life-style. Our primary goals are to provide opportunities for children to laugh, to have fun in outdoor activities (something that many are not able to do in their daily lives) and to deliver positive experiences that promote emotional and social growth.
Camper Facts
Summer camp is often the only time of the year when some children have an opportunity to see a nurse if they are ill and/or eat three nutritionally balanced meals each day.
Over 90% of the children served live below the California Adjusted Federal Poverty Guidelines and require significant financial assistance in order to be able to attend camp.
Families are never turned away based on ability to pay.
The majority of the children served reside in single parent homes or in substitute parent homes such as group homes or live with relatives or in foster care.
Camp Max Straus is one of the few camps in the greater Los Angeles area that provides residential camping programs to children with emotional, behavioral or social problems.
Post-Camp Services
Are beginning cycles of negative behavior that can lead to abuse of alcohol and drugs, dropping out of school, gang activity, and enmeshment with the law, the courts, and the juvenile justice system
Have difficulties relating to people (all campers take part in a ranch program where they interact with, and care for, animals.)
Are not able to attend “regular” camps due to their emotional, social or economic challenges.
