Witherbee Program
The Witherbee program is a High Sierra backpacking trip offered by Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters through its Camp Max Straus program in partnership with the National Forest Service. The program provides teenagers, ages 13 through 17, with a chance to learn backpacking skills, orienteering, fishing, outdoor cooking and other skills. It encourages cooperation, self-reliance, leadership and individualism. The program is open to boys and girls of all races, denominations and economic backgrounds.
The backpacking trip is physically challenging, including uneven mountainous terrain and significant changes in elevation. Due to the nature and location of the trips, it is essential that the participants be safety conscious, follow instructions and have demonstrated responsible behavior. The Witherbee Wilderness Program will furnish all backpack equipment, except for the camper's clothing.
The program is designed for teenagers who have had previous successful camp experiences. Camp Max Straus refers the majority of children who participate in the Witherbee Wilderness Program.
For more information on this special program please email Alba Arzu or call (323) 761-8675 x 223.
