My name is Shira, and I am honored to be a recipient of a Jewish BigBrothers Big Sisters scholarship. I’m currently a third-year Psychobiology student at UCLA, with a minor in Community Engagement and Social Change.
This year I’m taking courses like Intergenerational Communication and Social and Personality Development, and recently had the opportunity to volunteer with the nonprofit Rising Communities through a UCLA course called Engaging Los Angeles. Experiences like this have helped me connect what I’m learning in the classroom to real communities and real challenges.
Beyond academics, I’m active at UCLA Hillel as a member of theStudent Board and serve as Vice President of the Sephardic Culture Club. I’m also a fellow with the American Sephardi Federation, where I’ve been able to connect with mentors and peers who share a passion for preserving Sephardic tradition.
I am where I am today because of JBBBSLA’s amazing support through the College Access & Success Program provided to me and because of this scholarship, I’m able to work fewer hours and devote more time to my studies, leadership roles, and community involvement. Your support makes opportunities like this possible.
With appreciation,
Shira
